NG LA BANDA

NG La Banda, founded by flutist and composer José Luis “El Tosco” Cortés in the late ‘80s, is widely recognised as the band that launched the Timba movement. Known for their aggressive horn lines, NG La Banda’s brass section earned the nickname “Los Metales del Terror”. NG took Cuban dance music in a bold new direction—infusing jazz harmony, funk grooves, and rhythmic complexity into the traditional cuban music foundation. The group’s name, short for Nueva Generación, wasn’t just branding—it was a mission statement. They didn’t just modernise Cuban music—they reinvented it.
As El Tosco himself put it, the goal was to create a sound that fused Irakere’s jazz-fusion complexity with the danceability of Los Van Van —bridging two of the most powerful forces in Cuban music to create something entirely new.
